Memorial complex "Monument to the Soldiers-Internationalists"

The initiative to create a monument to soldiers-internationalists who died in Afghanistan belonged to the Minsk club of reserve soldiers "Memory", the Association of family members of soldiers who died in Afghanistan, "Memory and Duty".

A contest for the best design of the monument was announced.

Pavlov's project was acknowledged the best among nine projects of Belarusian sculptors-participants of the contest who proposed to erect the monument on the island in a bend of the river Svisloch near Troitskiy suburb. A group of authors from Dnepropetrovsk (now Dnipr, Ukraine) headed by the sculptor Y. Pavlov, architects: S. Taran, V. Shulga, V. Kosenko, A. Sviridonenko, designer A. Sigayev. The monument was being built for about six years. The main works were carried out by Railway Troops of the Republic of Belarus under the command of Major-General A. Stepuk.  Most of the expenses for the monument's construction were borne by the state, but the citizens of Belarus and the citizens of the former Soviet republics also transferred their personal funds to a special bank account for the monument's construction.
